Fishing report for Jan. 1

LAKES

Harts: The crappie fishing has been very good, with many of the fish larger than an adult’s hand. The high, cold water has slowed the trout fishing. Most people are using crappie jigs in 28-30 feet of water.

Moses: The lake should be in good shape for those who want to try ice fishing for walleye, perch and trout. The southwest corner of the lake is already frozen over.

Offut: The trout fishing has been good, with people catching a number of rainbows weighing 2-5 pounds. Still fishing has been best, with people fishing with Power Bait off the bottom. Start with a leader 2-3 feet long, and adjust until the fish start biting consistently.

Washington: The action has been fair to good near the mouth of the Cedar River. Anglers are catching cutthroat trout by slowly trolling with white spoons.

RIVERS

Humptulips: Drift fishing with eggs has been producing some hookups with steelhead.

Olympic Coast: The rivers are in good shape and they have been producing good catches of steelhead. The Bogachiel has been the most productive of the Forks-area rivers, based on state creel counts. From Dec. 25-27, 128 anglers caught and released five wild fish, and kept 61 and released two hatchery fish. With cold, clear weather in the forecast, the next week or so would be a good time to hit one of the rivers.

Skykomish: The river is producing some steelhead and an occasional bull trout. Fishing with a float has been effective.

Wynoochee: The fishing for hatchery steelhead has been good to very good. Float and drift fishing has been productive.

Yakima: With water temperatures just above 32 degrees, don’t expect the fish to be too active. And with single-digit air temperatures, you will have to deal with ice in the river.

SALT WATER

Clams: The state will wait until later this month before announcing any future razor clam digs. State shellfish managers said they will wait for the results of tests to be done next week before planning another round of digs. Tests of samples taken Dec. 15 showed safe levels at Long Beach and Copalis, while Twin Harbors and Mocrocks remain above the safety threshold. So far there has been only one three-day dig at Copalis.

Fly fishing: The fishing for sea-run cutthroat trout has been fair to good. Look for fish working near the surface as the tide moves the water. Smaller flies, such as a Clouser minnow, have been effective.

North Sound: The blackmouth fishing has been good around the San Juan Islands. While fewer in number, the larger fish are being caught in Rosario Strait.

South Sound: The action has been slowed by the poor weather earlier in the week. The action should pick up if the good weather holds this week. An 8-pound, 10-ounce blackmouth was caught Sunday. Look for fish at the clay banks, the shelf between points Defiance and Dalco and at Quartermaster Harbor. Squid fishing has been fair at local docks. Crab fishing in the area closed Friday.
