Fishing report for Jan. 8

LAKES

Moses: Ice fishermen are catching yellow perch. They are using small Swedish Pimples tipped with maggots. An angler went through the ice recently, so people need to be aware of the ice thickness.

Offut: Anglers are catching plenty of rainbow trout, with most people fishing with worms off the bottom. Orange Power Bait with a worm is a good combination.

Washington: Anglers are reporting marked cutthroat trout and perch on their electronics. The trick has been getting them to bite. A small needlefish spoon tipped with a worm is triggering some cutthroat to bite.

RIVERS

Nisqually: Anglers are reminded the river was closed to recreational fishing Wednesday. The closure runs from the mouth upstream to the military tank crossing bridge, a mile upstream from the mouth of Muck Creek.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead fishing has been fair, based on state creel checks. People are catching fish on the Bogachiel, Calawah and Sol Duc, just not in large numbers. The action on the Hoh has been slow, with a few more fish being caught in the lower river. Rivers are running low and clear.

Skykomish: The steelhead fishing has been fair to good. People are having success casting spoons into the seams.

Wynoochee: This river and others in the area are producing good catches of hatchery steelhead. Drifting eggs or using steelhead jigs under a float have been working best. One angler reported changes to a number of fishing holes on the Humptulips following recent high flows.

Yakima: While there is still some ice on the river edges, the trout action has improved some with some slightly warmer temperatures.

SALT WATER

Clams: A razor clam dig continues through Thursday. Both Long Beach and Copalis are open Saturday, with Long Beach remaining the only option Sunday through Thursday. Low tides are in the evening: Saturday at 6:16 p.m.; Sunday at 6:55 p.m.; Monday at 7:34 p.m.; Tuesday at 8:14 p.m.; Wednesday at 8:56 p.m.; and Thursday at 9:40 p.m. Digging is best an hour or two before low tide. Twin Harbors and Mocrock beach areas are closed because the clams are not safe to eat.

Fly fishing: Some resident coho and coastal cutthroat trout are being caught off rocky beaches in Marine Area 10. Clouser minnow and sculpin patterns were effective. Action has been good when the tide is moving the water.

Shrimp: The state has announced it will delay the opening of the Puget Sound recreational shrimp fishery one week, allowing fishing to start May 14. This will avoid extremely low tides that are expected May 7, what would traditionally be the opening day of the season. Full season details have not been released.

South Sound: Salmon anglers in Marine Area 13 are catching a few fish by trolling or mooching at Point Gibson, or trolling off Green Point and the mouth of Wollochet Bay. People are still catching some squid off area docks.
