Fishing report for Jan. 15

LAKES

Chelan: For big lake trout, including some topping 27 pounds, look for fish within 5 feet of the bottom in depths between 150-250 feet in the Barrens area. The kokanee fishing has been very good. Use your electronics to find them because the fish are spread throughout the water column.

Munn: The lake has been covered with ice lately, but the slight warming trend and rain could alleviate that issue.

Offut: Some people are catching limits fishing off the bottom, especially from the dock. Some of the fish are weighing 1.5-4 pounds. Try use Power Bait with a worm and some garlic oil.

Potholes: The only usable boat ramp is the Blythe Bay access, which is a rough gravel access point. Ice has blocked all the other ramps.

Riffe: The fishing has been very slow at the dam.

Spanaway: There have been fishing jumping on the surface, but there have been no fishermen chasing them.

RIVERS

Olympic Coast: The steelhead fishing has been fair to good in most of the rivers around Forks. The Bogachiel and lower Hoh have been producing the most fish. As the rivers drop and clear, consider going with smaller offerings.

Wynoochee: The good news is the river is producing plenty of steelhead. The bad news is that means a traffic jam of boats headed downstream each day. People are having success using corkies and yarn, eggs and plugs.

Yakima: Fish the holes where water is moving slower than a walking pace, or where there is some sort of current break to create some chop on the surface. Try larger flies like a size 6 Pat’s stonefly or smaller options like a size 18 olive brassie.

SALT WATER

Fly fishing: Beach anglers are hooking plenty of resident coho, with some fish measuring 16-17 inches long. Euphausiid patterns like the Killa Krilla fished on a floating line with 9-foot leader have been effective. There also are plenty of coastal cutthroat around, which must be released. Woolly buggers in peach and marabou clousers in peach/yellow have been effective.

North Sound: The most consistent blackmouth action has been in the San Juan Islands. Hoochies and Coho Killers behind a flasher, trolled about 115-130 feet deep, have been effective. Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) will reopen to fishing for chinook Saturday. All wild chinook must be released.

South Sound: The action south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge has been spotty. Some fish are being caught off Point Gibson, Green Point and the mouth of Wollochet Bay. Try trolling with a hoochie or spoon behind a flasher 10 feet off the bottom in water 120-150 feet deep. Some squid are still being caught off local docks.
