Seahawks feel fortunate to get good news on Damien Lewis’ bad-looking injury
The Seahawks may have escaped a more-serious injury to Damien Lewis.
The starting left guard was taken from Lumen Field on the back of a motorized cart with an air cast over his right ankle during the first half of Seattle’s 27-11 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears Thursday night. It looked bad — and like Phil Haynes was now going to join veteran Gabe Jackson as the Seahawks’ starting guards for the opening game Sept. 12 against Denver.
Every Seahawks came off the sidelines to be near Lewis in the middle of the field as he stayed down and medics pumped the air cast over his leg.
But coach Pete Carroll said the team got good news from X-rays on Lewis.
“D-Lew, we’re very fortunate. He had a lateral ankle sprain out of the deal,” Carroll said. “Got rolled up on and all that. All the X-rays and stuff were negative. Very fortunate there. He was upbeat about that a little bit. Maybe surprised by the results, but we’re thrilled by it, as well.”
A sprain doesn’t mean Lewis will be able to play in week one. But the Seahawks do have an extensive break between their preseason finale Aug. 26 at Dallas and that first game against Russell Wilson’s Broncos.
Lewis went down at the end of a running play early in the second quarter Thursday. A motorized cart took him from the field to the tunnel from which injured players often go to nearby Harborview Medical Center by ambulance.
The Seahawks announced minutes later Lewis was out for the rest of the game with an ankle injury. Haynes replaced him, and played both left and right guard in the game.
Carroll said this month he believes his team has three starting-caliber guards. Haynes may now get his chance to prove his coach correct for the next couple weeks. He was the Seahawks’ fourth-round draft choice in 2019. His career has been sidetracked by multiple injuries.
Expect Haynes to start for the Seahawks Friday in the team’s final game of the preseason, at Dallas.
