GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 28, SPANAWAY LAKE 12

The Eagles wrapped up their undefeated run through the 4A SPSL South Division schedule with a victory against the host Sentinels on Thursday, but it wasn’t easy.

Spanaway Lake (2-6, 1-4) recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff and was able to put together some long drives throughout the game to keep the Graham-Kapowsin defense on the field.

“Our defense was on the field for a long time,” Graham-Kapowsin coach Jeff Logan said. “When we scored – it wasn’t necessarily quick, but we were pretty efficient in the first half … so they possessed the ball a long time.”

The Sentinels ran empty sets throughout the game, more than they had shown on film and caught the Eagles by surprise a few times, helping extend drives.

“We weren’t ill-prepared, but you have to be disciplined and we made a few mistakes,” Logan said. “We made adjustments and limited big plays. It was kind of the same thing on offense, just little mistakes and some mental lapses. We had a couple of special teams turnovers, which is uncharacteristic of us.”

Kolton Wadley was 20-of-25 passing for 220 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a quarterback sneak. Kase Betz had six receptions for 60 yards, Quinncey Ratteray had three receptions for 50 yards and Davin Kirkwood caught the touchdown pass. Blake Pearson ran 13 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns, while Randy Reyes carried the ball nine times for 60 yards.

Betz led the Eagles with tackles, while Julius Hernandez-Avila recorded a sack.

Graham-Kapowsin (8-0, 5-0) will host the SPSL North Division champion at a time and date to be determined at Art Crate Field next weekend.

Malik Burns caught a pair of touchdown passes from Jericho Martin and Caleb Coppock for the Sentinels.

STADIUM 51, AUBURN RIVERSIDE 19

Darius Sum returned to the field for the Tigers on Thursday, while Diego Cabrera tried to steal the show with a Big Man touchdown in a 4A NPSL romp against the Ravens at Stadium Bowl.

Sum, who was injured in the first quarter of Week 6, wasn’t 100 percent Thursday, but coach Patrick Johnson wanted to make sure he was able to join his fellow seniors on the field for a final home game.

“We just kind of wanted him to get out there,” Johnson said. “We expect to be on the road in Week 10, so we wanted to make sure he was able to play one more home game. He’s one of the best ever at Stadium.”

Cabrera, meanwhile, is a 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive lineman, who tipped a screen pass to himself, intercepted it and rumbled into the end zone for an early lead. It was all Tigers (6-2, 4-2) all the time from there.

Raider Pula scored on a short run to make it 13-0 and after a Riverside (1-7, 1-5) touchdown, Sum caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Kooper Tasler for a 20-6 lead. Tasler added a field goal and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Case Kelanic for a 30-6 halftime lead.

It was a marked difference from a 70-26 loss suffered to Kennedy Catholic in Week 7.

“Last week I told the guys we would let it all hang out – so we did fake punts and onside kicks and it gave Kennedy some short fields, so the game got away from us a bit,” Johnson said. “We talk a lot about fighting adversity and getting through it and they responded pretty well tonight.”

Milo Edwards added a rushing touchdown, Pula had a kickoff return for a touchdown and Avery Voight caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tasler.

Stadium closes the regular season at Tahoma next week.
