Brendan Donovan out of Mariners lineup vs. Rangers with hip discomfort

After being removed from Friday night's loss with discomfort in his left hip, Brendan Donovan was not in Saturday's starting lineup vs. the Rangers.

I think it was on one of the plays he made at third base on a throw," manager Dan Wilson said. "So we're just kind of monitoring it and see how it goes. It's a day-to-day situation."

Donovan has dealt with minor groin and hip issues early in the season. Since he had offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia, the Mariners medical staff wants to be extra cautious with any discomfort in his core area.

"It's something that you have to closely monitor and keep watching," Wilson said. "It's a big surgery, and he did a great job of getting through it, getting through spring training, and the slow ramp-up in spring training. Now that we're into the season, it's just continued monitoring."

He has played in 18 games this season, posting a .304/.437/.518 slash line with three doubles, three homers, eight RBI, nine walks and 12 strikeouts. The Mariners have discussed ways to help keep Donovan on the field and not having to deal with minor nagging injuries.

"We continue to make our adjustment," Wilson said. "That's what baseball is, and we'll continue to make our adjustments as we go. Maybe, it's a DH day here and there, maybe it's other things we look at, but right now, we'll just see how things go.

Miller makes rehab start

Bryce Miller made his first start of his rehab stint with mixed success in Triple-A Tacoma's 6-4 win over the Sacramento River Cats on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.

Scheduled to pitch either two innings or 30 pitches, Miller fell an out short of finishing the second inning before being lifted.

Pitching in a game for the first time since late February, Miller worked a scoreless first inning, working around a one-out walk. He struck out the first batter he faced on a pitch clock violation.

The bottom of the second wasn't quite as smooth. He allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning. He was able to pick up an out on a fielder's choice. But he allowed a run-scoring single on a ground ball through the right side. Osleivis Basabe followed with a two-run double to left-center. Miller came back to strike out Nate Furman. With his pitch count at 33, he was lifted from the game.

Miller's fastball ranged from 96-98 mph and he threw his entire repertoire of pitches.

With Tacoma on the road next week, Miller is expected to pitch Friday night at Funko Field for High-A Everett.
