Phillies Announce J.T. Realmuto News After Leaving Braves Game

The Philadelphia Phillies entered Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves looking to snap a three-game losing streak and reestablish themselves as contenders in the National League East. Philadelphia sits at 8-11, underperforming early, though it is still only mid-April.

Despite the team's struggles, catcher J.T. Realmuto has been one of the bright spots. The 35-year-old re-signed with the club this past offseason on a three-year, $45 million contract that runs through 2028.

The Phillies had few alternatives at the position, and while the deal carried some risk given Realmuto's age, he has rewarded the investment so far. A three-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger and two-time Gold Glove winner, Realmuto has looked closer to his prime form than expected.

Through 15 games, he has posted a .292 batting average, .382 on-base percentage, .778 OPS, one home run and four RBIs.

However, health has been an issue. Realmuto missed time earlier in April with a right foot contusion, and on Saturday he suffered another setback.

During the bottom of the sixth inning, backup catcher Rafael Marchan unexpectedly stepped into the on-deck circle to pinch-hit for Realmuto with no immediate explanation. By the top of the seventh, Marchan had taken over behind the plate.

Moments later, the Phillies announced the reason. "J.T. Realmuto has lower back tightness, Phillies said," reported Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation.

Realmuto finished the game 0-for-2, but the bigger concern is whether this latest issue will require a stint on the injured list.

The Phillies already lost All-Star closer Jhoan Duran earlier on Saturday, and losing a player of Realmuto's caliber would be another significant blow for a team trying to stabilize itself.

Philadelphia can only hope the injury proves minor, because they cannot afford to lose one of their most important players at a time when they are still searching for consistency.
