Natasha Cloud Addresses Remaining Unsigned As 2026 WNBA Season Nears
WNBA teams opened their training camps on Sunday, and for the first time since 2020, Natasha Cloud was not in attendance.
Cloud, 34, opted out of the 2020 WNBA season to focus on “social reform” and has remained a fierce political and social activist. Many are speculating that this is why Cloud remains unsigned, though neither Cloud nor any WNBA franchise has said that.
Cloud did comment on her surprising ongoing free agency on Sunday, however.
“I’ve given my heart to every team and community I’ve been part of, never fully knowing if the impact I hoped for was truly felt,” Cloud wrote on Threads. “In this moment, though, receiving so much love, support, and advocacy means everything. It’s a powerful reminder that the impact I’ve wanted to make beyond the court is real - and aligned with what I believe God has called me to do through this game.”
Cloud added, “I'm okay. Just taking things in; even if they weren't what I expected, & trusting I'll be alright [cloud emoji, hand-heart emoji].”
Cloud began her WNBA career as a second-round pick of the Washington Mystics in the 2015 draft. She is a three-time All-Defensive guard and won the 2019 WNBA championship with the Mystics - the same year she earned the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award.
The Phoenix Mercury signed Cloud in free agency in February 2024, and she starred alongside Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper in Taurasi’s final season.
Last offseason, Cloud was part of a four-team trade that sent her to the Connecticut Sun, but the New York Liberty traded for her on March 16, 2025. With the Liberty, Cloud averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals across 41 games.
The WNBA’s 30th season tips off on May 8.
