Sean McVay Refused To Answer Matthew Stafford Question After Drafting Ty Simpson

The Los Angeles Rams may have found their quarterback of the future in the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting Alabama's Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.

Simpson had a great 2025 season with the Crimson Tide, completing 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns. Now, he'll get to sit back and learn from a future Hall of Famer in Matthew Stafford.

"He's one of the greatest of all time, quarterback wise," Simpson said of Stafford. "And we watched his film all the time when I was at Bama. ... So the fact that I get to be in a room and soak up all that knowledge is something that I couldn't ask for a better situation."

There have been some retirement rumors surrounding Stafford over the past two years, but he's committed to at least one more ride with the Rams.

During this Thursday night's media availability, Rams coach Sean McVay made it clear that Stafford is the unquestioned starter for the 2026 season.

"Let's make one thing clear, this is Matthew's team," McVay told reporters.

McVay informed Stafford that Simpson was going to be the pick at No. 13. Interestingly enough, the Super Bowl-winning coach refused to share any information regarding their conversation.

Was McVay unhappy with the pick?

NFL fans are convinced McVay's body language on Thursday night was alarming. That doesn't mean he's against the pick, but people are speculating about a potential rift behind the scenes.

"The videos of them after the pick was dead … no energy… Simpson better be special bc everyone boo'd that pick," one fan said.

"Sean Mcvay, seems usually enthusiastic about everything, so this looks odd," a second fan said.

"Maybe Stafford's agent texted Snead and said if u think this gives u any leverage you're wrong and now Matt's price just went up," another fan wrote.

Time will tell if the Rams made the right decision drafting Simpson.

For now though, McVay said Simpson will compete with Stetson Bennett IV for the backup quarterback job.
