Red Sox Announce Unfortunate Injury News on Garrett Crochet

While it’s only April, the MLB season has not be very kind to the Boston Red Sox who are 12-18 entering Wednesday’s slate of games and currently in last place in the AL East.

They fired manager Alex Cora on Saturday evening and while they’re 2-1 with new interim manager Chad Tracy, they got some more bad news before series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Red Sox announced that ace starter pitcher Garrett Crochet has been officially placed on the 15-day IL (retroactive to April 26) with left shoulder inflammation.

To fill his spot on the roster, the Red Sox elected to go with a position player for the time being and recall INF/OF Nick Eaton from Triple-A Worcester.

This season, Crochet had an up and down start. He pitched six shut out innings in his last start on April 25, but had back-to-back outings before that where he gave up five and 10 earned runs. He’s pitched 30.0 innings and has a 6.30 ERA.

Boston recently called up rookie Payton Tolle who made his second start on Tuesday night, and currently has starting pitcher Sonny Gray also on the IL with a hamstring injury.

So as of now, it’s unknown who could potentially fill in a fifth starter until Crochet or Gray can return as the four other starters are currently Payton Tolle, Brayan Bello, Ranger Suarez, and Connelly Early.
