Matt Brash leaves Mariners game with discomfort: Here's what we know

MINNEAPOLIS - Matt Brash wasn't sure what to do. He was surrounded by the Mariners infielders and catcher Cal Raleigh as manager Dan Wilson and athletic trainer Kevin Orloski talked to him on the mound about the discomfort he was feeling in his right side.

He kept his glove by his mouth, staring almost through them.

"I wasn't arguing with Dan, but he was telling me to come out of the game, and I was just, I don't know. I was just trying to process it all in the moment."

Following Brash's second pitch of his relief appearance in the eighth inning of the Mariners' 5-3 win, Raleigh had signaled to the dugout that something was wrong with the hard-throwing reliever.

On his first pitch - a 96-mph fastball - Brash grimaced slightly. His second pitch - a changeup - sailed into the left-handed hitter's box. Raleigh could see the awkward mechanics leading up to that pitch and knew something was wrong.

"I couldn't really get my arm into the right spot that like I needed to," Brash said.

Brash finally walked off the mound with Orloski and Gabe Speier was summoned from the bullpen.

"It felt really weird coming out of the game, Brash said. "I'd never done that before. I didn't really want to, but I just felt like at that point, I couldn't really compete to the best of my ability. I didn't want to hurt the team or anything going out there with my 80% effort. It sucks. I feel bad and I put Gabe in a really tough spot there."

Brash had dealt with some minor discomfort in his right side for the past few days.

"It's been bugging me a little bit this past week, but nothing that's affected me in the game like it did today," he said.

Brash felt the discomfort in his scoreless inning pitched on Tuesday night, particularly on a few fastballs. But he thought that the colder temperatures were playing a factor in it.

"I was a little sore, but I didn't think anything of it," he said. "And I felt really good after the game, and I felt good pregame today, so I was good to go. It just kind of creeped up on me in the bullpen before I came in. When I got in the game, I was hoping my adrenaline would take over a little bit and kind of get me through it. I knew right away on those first couple pitches that it just didn't feel right."

Brash will meet with the Mariners' team doctors and likely undergo imaging on Thursday in Seattle. Given how cautious they've been with Brash since his return from Tommy John surgery early last season, they could put him on the injured list to make sure he doesn't make it worse. They've dealt with oblique issues with Bryce Miller since spring training.

"We're gonna take it day by day and go from here," he said. "I will meet with the team docs and kind of just figure it out. I don't think it's anything super serious or anything like that. I'm not super concerned about it. It was very precautionary, and I just didn't want to make it worse."
