Danny Musovski's late goal extends Sounders' home unbeaten streak
For too long, San Diego FC was in the same sentence as Paris Saint-Germain.
The last time the Sounders lost a match at Lumen Field, it was against the European giant during the FIFA men's Club World Cup in June 2025. A run that includes defeating Lionel Messi's Inter Miami for a Leagues Cup title.
A spiraling San Diego made its second trip to the storied facility Saturday. After grabbing an early lead, the visitors appeared to have a game plan that could not only be their first win since March but hand the Sounders their first loss at home in nearly a year.
San Diego blocked seven shots and keeper Duran Ferree had three saves before Danny Musovski had the needed touch in the 80th minute to give the Sounders a 1-1 draw. The score started from an Albert Rusnák corner kick and was flicked toward Musovski off an assist from midfielder Cristian Roldan.
I get nervous about that stat because at some point that is going to go away," Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said of the team's 21-match unbeaten streak, across all competitions at Lumen. "If you look at the standings, we've only lost one game all year in the regular season. But it just feels like the last two games we've dropped points and that's why we have that funny feeling in our stomach of the job is not quiet finished, yet."
Roldan had an errant backward pass that last-placed Sporting Kansas City used to draw 1-1 on their turf last week.
If the Sounders would've won both matches outright, the dropped four points would place them third in MLS's Supporters' Shield standings with two matches in hand. Instead, the Sounders dropped to seventh in the 30-team league.
"It doesn't feel great right at this second," Schmetzer said.
San Diego netted the opening goal in the 18th minute, silencing majority of the 31,528 in attendance.
Onni Valakari played an innocuous pass to Marcus Ingvartsen in a crowded box. The forward darted past Nouhou and placed a right-footed shot past Sounders keeper Andrew Thomas.
It marked the second time this season the Sounders (6-1-3) ceded first. The other time was a road loss against Real Salt Lake in February.
The goal cast a stretch of sloppy play from the Sounders. The visitors found attempts from winger Amahl Pellegrino in the 22nd minute and Ingvartsen in the 25th minute that Thomas had to stretch to save from snuggling in goal.
Jordan Morris thought he had the equalizer in the 31st minute. The play was built from the back with Jesús Ferreira sending a nicely weighted pass for Morris to chase. But the Sounders forward was offside by a sleeve and the flag raised immediately after he mashed a shot across the line.
Morris and Paul Rothrock missed two attempts in the final 10 minutes of the half to enter the break down 1-0.
"It built pressure that we needed to get that goal," Musovski said of his team trailing at halftime.
Schmetzer made his first changes in the 63rd minute. Newly signed midfielder Peter Kingston replaced Kalani Kossa-Rienzi and Musovski subbed on for Snyder Brunell. Two minutes later, Schmetzer replaced Nouhou with Antino Lopez.
The Sounders (6-1-3) pelted Ferree with attempts and could only get one scrappy shot past the line. San Diego blocked nine shots overall in the match.
"I was frustrated on one (attempt) that Albert played and the keeper made a save," Musovski said of a series earlier in the 80th minute. "I was thinking on the corner kick that I really wanted to score to make up for that."
Rusnák returned to the Sounders starting lineup. He recently suffered a hamstring injury and played off the bench against Sporting Kansas City last week.
The midfielder ran the attack with Morris replacing Musovski up top and Ferreira moving to the right wing.
"I'm glad Musovski scored a goal in the regular season," Schmetzer said of the forward, who also scored two goals in CONCACAF Champions Cup play this year. "I gotta reflect on my lineup choices, how we started the game. We've got to get someone to get hot. We gotta get someone to put a goal in the back of the net.
The Sounders will continue their homestand against San Jose on Wednesday. The Quakes (9-1-2) lead the league's Supporters' Shield standings, but the Sounders won the first meeting between the sides 1-0 in March.
