Red Sox's Garrett Crochet Announces Injury Update Before Phillies Game

The Boston Red Sox are in last place in the American League East at 17-24, operating under an interim manager after Alex Cora was fired earlier this season, and watching a rotation full of injuries slowly sink what was supposed to be a contending club.

The one pitcher who could change all of that is Garett Crochet, and he took a step toward coming back on Wednesday. Crochet said he plans to throw a bullpen session, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe, marking substantial progress in his recovery from left shoulder inflammation. The Red Sox placed Crochet on the 15-day injured list on April 29, retroactive to April 26.

To understand what Boston has been missing, look at what Crochet did in 2025. He went 18-5 in 32 starts with a 2.59 ERA, leading the AL with 205 1/3 innings pitched as well as leading the MLB with 255 strikeouts, finishing second in AL Cy Young voting to Detroit Tiger, Tarik Skubal.

Instead, Crochet opened 2026, posting a 6.30 ERA across six starts, allowing 21 runs on 33 hits before the inflammation shut him down.

His return is close but still not exactly clear. Tracy has said that Crochet has been throwing up to 120 feet and has been completing mound sessions, but the Red Sox will need to see him throw multiple bullpen sessions and face live batters before activating him.

Once Crochet is healthy enough to return, if he can even provide a fraction of his 2025 performance, the Red Sox will improve their chances of gaining some ground in the competitive AL East.
