Seahawks sign second-round draft pick Bud Clark, leaving one unsigned

The Seahawks announced Wednesday they signed second-round draft pick Bud Clark, meaning only one draft pick remains unsigned - first-round running back Jadarian Price.

The safety, who was the 64th overall pick out of TCU, gets a standard four-year deal worth up to $7.878 million with a $2.198 million signing bonus.

Contracts for draft picks are all four-year deals with salaries and signing bonuses slotted by draft pick position. One of the few negotiable aspects is how much or how many years of base salaries are guaranteed.

NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reported that Clark gets fully guaranteed salaries of $885,000 in 2026 and $1,245,506 in 2027 and gets 69.44% of his 2028 salary fully guaranteed, or $1.152 million of $1.606 million. The base salary in the fourth year of the deal in 2029 of $1,966,518 is not guaranteed.

Wilson reported that the percentage of base salary guarantee Clark received in 2028 is up from 58.6% for the same draft slot a year ago. That likely loomed as the key negotiating point in getting the contract signed.

Clark and all of the Seahawks' rookies are back with the team this week as they are in the second week of the three-week phase two portion of the offseason workout program.

During phase two, the offense can be on the field and go through plays with no contact and pads, and the defense can work out separately with no contact and pads. Phase three, which starts May 26, is when the Seahawks can work 11-on-11.

It's been pretty good getting to know the guys," Clark was quoted as saying of how the workouts are going in a story posted on Seahawks.com. "They've taking me under their wing, so I've just been following them, understanding their steps.

Clark, listed at 6-foot-1, 188 pounds by the team, is expected to compete with returning vets Ty Okada and A.J. Finley and free agent signee Rodney Thomas II for an open starting spot at safety created when Coby Bryant signed as a free agent with the Bears.

Price, who was the 32nd overall pick, has also been shown taking part in workouts despite not signing his contract.

Price is due to get a fully guaranteed deal worth up to $16.78 million with an $8.7 million signing bonus.

While the overall years and totals are set, teams and players can negotiate the timing of bonus payouts and offset language, meaning how much of the contract a player would get if he is cut and signs with another team.

Players typically try to assure they would get all of the money so they could potentially double-dip, while teams fight for language to assure their payment would be decreased by the amount a player would get from another team.

Thirteen of the first 20 first-round picks have signed their contracts but none have from 21-32. That indicates Price could be waiting to see what precedents are set by those above him who sign before inking his deal.
