Prep Highlights: Tyler Head's complete-game effort sends Columbia River to 2A district title game in baseball
May 13-Tyler Head threw a complete-game, eight-hit shutout to lift Columbia River to a 2-1 victory over W.F. West in Wednesday's 2A winner-to-state district semifinal baseball game.
The Rapids, winners of the 2A Greater St. Helens League, face Tumwater in Friday's district championship game.
Both teams scored in the first inning, and Greg Blau scored the winning run from the third in the fourth on a two-out wild pitch.
Ryan Chatham finished 1 for 2 with a run scored, while Blau went 1 for 3 with a run. Zach Sims and Noah Griffith each added a hit for the Rapids.
Columbia River will face Tumwater at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wheeler Field in Centralia for the 2A district championship.
RIDGEFIELD 1, MARK MORRIS 0: Jake Blankenship's RBI single in the eighth inning scored Henry Wikstrom from second base to keep the Spudders' season alive in the 2A District 4 tournament.
Blankenship accounted for both Spudders hit in a game that featured a combined four hits. Starting pitcher Reece Holmes struck out nine over eight innings.
The Spudders need to win two more loser-out games on Saturday to advance to state. The first will be against W.F. West 11 a.m. Saturday at W.F. West in Chehalis.
R.A. LONG 3, WASHOUGAL 2: Korgin Booth's walk-off run off a Kamble Johns sacrifice bunt kept the Lumberjacks' season alive in the 2A District 4 tournament. The Lumberjacks face another loser-out game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Aberdeen in Chehalis.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 11, SHELTON 2: The 3A Greater St. Helens League champions earned a 3A state berth and spot in the 3A District title game.
Dylan Knox and Kai Madrigal combined to go 6 for 7 with three runs scored. The Thunder grabbed a 10-2 lead in the fifth following a six-run half-inning.
Thunder starting pitcher Nick Wilcox allowed three hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
Mountain View will host Kelso at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the 3A district championship.
KELSO 3, PRAIRIE 0: Ole Miss commit Bryce Collins struck out 14 Prairie hitters and allowed two hits over 6.2 innings to give the Hilanders a state berth.
Kelso faces Mountain View in Friday's 3A District title game.
KENNEDY CATHOLIC 9, CAMAS 2: The Lancers scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to eliminate the Papermakers at the 4A bi-district tournament. Hayden Ollmann went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Camas.
BATTLE GROUND 2, KENTRIDGE 0: Collin McGowan threw a five-hit shutout and struck out five to keep the Tigers' season alive at the 4A bi-district tournament. The Tigers will face Kennedy Catholic at 11 a.m. Saturday at Aaron Pointer Field in Tacoma for a berth to state.
PUYALLUP 19, UNION 2: The Vikings pounded out 19 hits and rushed out to a 12-0 lead after the second inning to eliminate the Titans from the 4A bi-district tournament.
Softball
PRAIRIE 7, KELSO 4: Payton Miller's walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning gave the Falcons the No. 1 seed to Friday's 3A District tournament at Heritage. Kelso is the No. 2 seed to districts.
Prairie pitcher Mackenzie Moore struck out 19 Kelso batters and allowed just six hits. Kelso pitcher Kylie Killett struck out 12.
SHELTON 7, MOUNTAIN VIEW 1 - Peyton Lalande struck out nine over seven innings and had one of Mountain View's three hits as the Thunder's season ended in a 3A district play-in game.
