Warriors Facing Significant Changes After Steve Kerr Decision
Steve Kerr is staying put on the Golden State Warriors sideline. The Warriors decided to re-sign the four-time NBA champion head coach to a new two-year deal running through the 2027-28 season, the team announced Tuesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed, though Kerr previously earned $17.5 million annually on a two-year, $35 million deal. This keeps him as the highest-paid coach in NBA history.
While Kerr remains, his supporting cast will look different next season.
Lead assistants Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse are both leaving Golden State, per ESPN. Kris Weems is the lone holdover expected to remain with the team.
Uncertainty surrounded Kerr's future in Golden State heading into the offseason. The Warriors endured a tumultuous, injury-riddled campaign that tested the entire organization. Key contributors Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody both suffered season-ending injuries. Superstar Stephen Currymissed 27 games with a right knee injury.
Kerr still navigated Golden State to a 37-45 record, good for 10th in the Western Conference. The Warriors fought valiantly in the play-in tournament but fell short of securing a postseason spot.
Kerr stands as one of the most successful coaches of the modern era. His 12-year run with the franchise includes eight playoff appearances, four championships and six NBA Finals appearances. He carries a career record of 604-353 and a 104-48 playoff mark. Golden State won its last championship in 2022 and continues to chase a return to its glory days.
The Warriors will now look to fill the void left by the departures of assistant coaches Stotts and Stackhouse.
Former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green is reportedly the top candidate to join Kerr's staff. The roster and coaching personnel may look different next season. But through all the change, Kerr will be there to steady the ship.
