Dallas Wings Coach Jose Fernandez Throws Players Under Bus 3 Games Into Season
Apparently, the Dallas Wings are already searching for answers this WNBA season.
The Wings dropped to 1-2 on the season after suffering a 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday night. Paige Bueckers tried her best to carry her squad to a win, scoring 27 points and dishing out eight assists. Unfortunately, the former Rookie of the Year didn't get much help from the rest of the starting lineup.
Wings coach Jose Fernandez made it abundantly clear that he wasn't thrilled with the product on the floor Thursday night, calling his team "selfish" during his postgame media availability.
"There's selfishness in this locker room… You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you played. And don't get upset if you think that you should have played more, or you didn't play enough, or you didn't get the shots that you think you should have gotten," Fernandez said, via For The Win. "Really good teams, they don't give a s--- about that. You know what they give a s--- about? They give a s--- about winning."
Fernandez didn't drop any names, but that's about as animated a coach will get this early in the season.
Did Fernandez already lose the locker room?
WNBA fans are convinced Fernandez's postgame comments will only make things worse for the Wings moving forward.
"Well Jose better tell those players directly and name names because knowing how unselfish Paige and Azzi are they'll think they should shoot less," one fan said.
"Does this not show Jose Fernandez has some resentment towards Azzi Fudd because Dallas fans, former players and social media have taken it upon themselves to defend/speak up for her? If she hasn't spoken up, who else could he have been talking directing those comments to?" a second fan commented.
"Blaming the team when you are the root of these problems," another fan replied. "The bad rotations are on you, setting no plays for your best shooter is on you too."
"The Dallas Wings are either going on an epic run, or Jose has lost the locker room after 3 games," a social media user said. "I fear there is really no in-between."
Fernandez was hired last offseason to bring stability to the Wings. While there's no question he's trying to do that, his comments may not sit well with some players in the locker room.
The Wings will be back in action Monday night against the Washington Mystics. If they suffer a third straight loss, Fernandez may unleash another rant.
Tipoff for the Mystics-Wings game is at 8 p.m. ET.
