John Schneider Shares Troubling Jose Berrios Injury Update Before Rays Game

The Toronto Blue Jays are enduring a disappointing season, sitting in fourth place in the AL East with a 19-24 record. The struggles come just one year after an impressive World Series run that ended in a Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Right-hander Jose Berríos struggled during his last season with the Blue Jays, posting a 4.17 ERA and 1.301 WHIP with 138 strikeouts across 166 innings in 31 appearances. He has yet to pitch this season after suffering a stress fracture in his right elbow that also sidelined him during Toronto's postseason run last year.

Berrios made four rehab starts with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons but continued to deal with soreness. A recent MRI revealed inflammation and "small changes" to the original injury, putting his return to the mound on hold.

According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, the Blue Jays are still consulting with Berríos and his doctors before making a final decision on his elbow. Toronto manager John Schneider acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, saying, "Surgery is on the table."

If Berríos undergoes surgery, he would likely miss the remainder of the season, making the situation even more concerning for the Blue Jays.

Since last season, Berríos has seen a decline in his overall performance due to decreased velocity, lingering arm injuries, and a controversial off-field incident. As a pitcher, his value is measured almost entirely by his production on the mound and the support he provides to the Blue Jays' rotation.

The 31-year-old is a two-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove Award in 2023. He was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the 32nd overall pick in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Berríos is currently in the middle of the seven-year, $131 million contract extension he signed with Toronto in 2021.
