Walla Walla's Dumser shoots 63 in district play to earn state golf berth

A wickedly good first round in district play was more than enough to vault Walla Walla senior Nile Dumser into next week's state golf tournament.

Dumser opened the two-day Class 3A District 6 tourney with an 8-under 63 on Monday, three strokes better than any other competitor's score either day, and followed that up with a 74 on Tuesday to place third with an overall score of 137.

Dumser was the lone Wa-Hi boy to qualify for state as the Blue Devils placed fourth as a team, missing out on team qualification by one spot. Zane Page shot a 78-77-155 to finish two strokes off the state qualifying group. On the girls side, Evie Sarley earned a state spot with a sixth-place finish.

All state golf tournaments will be held Tuesday and Wednesday. The 3A boys will compete at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey and the girls will play at Deer Park Golf Club.

In 1A District 5 action, College Place's Gemma Morrel placed second Wednesday at Othello's Legacy Golf Course to earn a state berth. The 1A girls tournament is at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.

DeSales' Jake Warwick, who shot a two-day 158, outdueled Pomeroy's Vinny Vecchio by one stroke last week in the 1B District 6 tourney at Warden's Sage Hills Golf Club. DeSales' Matthew Beck and Pomeroy's Grayson Slaybough and Cayle Mullins will join their teammates at state, while Walla Walla Valley Academy's Ava Heinrich and DeSales' Stella Warwick earned spots on the girls side. The 1B boys and 2B/1B girls tournaments will both be held at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
