Angel Reese's Atlanta Dream Home Opener Delivers Record WNBA Audience

In a primetime showdown aired Sunday, May 17, on NBC and Peacock, the defending champion Las Vegas Aces survived a furious comeback from the Atlanta Dream to escape with an 85–84 win in a game that quickly swung wide open.

A'ja Wilson, the reigning MVP and face of Las Vegas’ dynasty, battled through defensive attention all night while Chelsea Gray ultimately drilled the dagger, a cold-blooded jumper with 3.6 seconds left that silenced State Farm Arena and spoiled Atlanta's home opener.

The Dream had clawed back from a 19-point deficit, briefly taking the lead late in the fourth, only for the final possession to slip away in heartbreak fashion.

But the scoreboard isn't the headline anymore.

On Wednesday, NBC reported that the game averaged 1.24 million viewers, making it the most-watched WNBA Sunday game in May in league history.

And at the center of it all was Angel Reese in what was her first home game as a member of the Dream.

Reese quickly evolved into one of the most recognizable young stars in basketball since being selected 7th overall in the 2024 Draft by the Chicago Sky.

A dominant rebounder from day one, she led the WNBA in rebounding across her first two seasons and set multiple rookie records, earning back-to-back All-Star nods.

Reese has again been dominant on the boards through her first three games with the Dream this season, ranking second in the league with 12.7 rebounds per game, including a 12-point, 16-rebound performance in Atlanta’s win over Dallas on May 12.

Off the court, Reese's brand has surged just as fast, fueled by a strong social media presence with over 5.2 million followers on Instagram, the most of any WNBA player.

Her fashion sense and personality-driven branding have turned her into a marketing magnet, headlined by major endorsement deals including a signature sneaker and apparel line with Reebok, along with partnerships across lifestyle and consumer brands.

With Sunday's record viewership, Atlanta now has proof that its new identity under Reese can resonate on the biggest stage, even in defeat.

A one-point loss to the defending champs becomes a branding win when the matchup draws the largest Sunday WNBA audience in May ever recorded, reinforcing that her arrival wasn't just about basketball but about transforming the Dream into appointment television.
