Prep Highlights: Alyssa Rigby of Mountain View, Christian Harlow of King's Way Christian both fall short in playoffs at state golf

May 20-Alyssa Rigby and Christian Harlow both caught fire on the final day of the state golf championships on Wednesday.

Both shot their way into playoffs where they ultimately fell short. But forcing extra holes was a triumph considering both need to make up ground to do so.

Rigby started Day 2 of the Class 3A girls state tournament in fourth place, five shots behind Tatum Otto of Bellevue. The Mountain View sophomore and defending state champ made up ground with a blistering front nine at Deer Park Golf Club north of Spokane.

Rigby eagled both par 5s on the front nine and made the turn after shooting 6-under par 30. She shot 1-over on the back nine and finished the two-day tournament at 7-under.

That was good enough to get her into a playoff with Otto, who shot even-par 72 on Wednesday, and Bellevue's Nicole Tang. Otto, a senior who has committed to BYU, won the playoff with a birdie.

Harlow also started Wednesday in fourth place at the Class 1A boys state championship in Liberty Lake near Spokane. The King's Way Christian freshman quickly made up a four-shot deficit while shooting 7-under 65 on Wednesday.

Harlow, who did not make a bogey the entire tournament, finished at 9-under. That left him tied with Chelan senior Carson Clinton, who shot 4-under after starting the day one shot off the lead.

Clinton won the title after hitting his approach on the first playoff hole to within four feet, setting up a birdie.

2A Boys State Golf

Owen Winn finished second in the Class 2A boys state tournament to help Columbia River place second as a team.

The sophomore shot even-par 72 at Tumwater Valley to finish 1-over, one shot ahead of Washougal senior Trenton Maddox and Samuel Hodus of Bainbridge.

Columbia River sophomore Lucas Zygar shot 3-under on Wednesday to vault into fifth place after starting the day in 17th.

Wyatt Brownell of Burlington-Edison won by 11 shots after shooting 7-under 65 on Wednesday.

2A Girls State Golf

Addison Paul of Washougal placed third in a 2A girls state tournament that saw four 2A Greater St. Helens League golfers place in the top seven.

With three golfers in the top 15, Washougal won the team championship with 102 points, 31 ahead of second-place Burlington-Edison.

After starting the day in second place, two shots off the lead, Paul carded a 6-over 78 to finish with a 9-over 153 at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis.

Washougal freshman Keira Newman placed fifth (160), Columbia River senior Maia Carrillo placed sixth (162) and Ridgefield sophomore Evangeline Fulton finished seventh (167).

Washougal senior Sky Linden placed 15th.
