4A Boys Soccer: Home-field edge not enough for Skyview in a 3-0 loss to Lincoln-Seattle
May 20-The Skyview boys soccer team was hosting a state playoff game for the first time in more than a decade, and the Storm wanted to play that match for the first time on their on-campus field.
Also, Skyview had not lost on that field all season.
But even a little home-field karma couldn't change the Storm's luck as Skyview had its season end with a 3-0 loss to Lincoln of Seattle in the 4A state first round on Wednesday.
"The ball just didn't bounce our way," Skyview head coach Sean Janson said. "We can't complain because the ball has bounced our way quite a bit this season. The soccer gods always even things out, and it just wasn't our night."
For the first 40 minutes, it looked like things were pretty even. It looked like the kind of match that might be decided by a single goal.
That critical first goal when to Lincoln, when Elias Beard struck quickly in the 45th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Skyview created its opportunities to even the match. The Storm had a knack for rallying this season, but they could not find the back of the net on Wednesday.
"I think the opportunities in the final third were there," Janson said. "We just didn't put them away. We have scored a lot off set pieces throughout the year. And as you saw, we got a lot of opportunities to do that tonight."
It was a sour ending to a special first year as the Storm's coach for Janson. Skyview surprised many by capturing the 4A Greater St. Helens League championship.
"It's been a real special year, my first year," he said. "It was a big culture change in the program, and the guys, they really raised their standard. ... We say family at the end of every practice, every game, and we mean it. That's what probably hurts the most. We have seven seniors who won't be part of this team next year. So that's tough."
But what the Storm do return next season leaves Janson with a lot of encouragement for the future.
"We have a very strong junior class," Janson said. "Our best players are all juniors. There is not one person on this team that had experience in state prior to this game. And now they all do, and that's going to be very valuable for us next year."
