DeSales' Jake Warwick repeats as Class 1B state golf champion, Irish claim team title
DeSales sophomore Jake Warwick claimed his second straight medalist honor and helped the Irish secure the Class 1B state boys golf championship on Wednesday, May 20, at the Spokane Valley's Liberty Lake Golf Course.
Warwick, after a rough opening round on Tuesday in which he carded a 78, used a 1-over par score of 71 to outdistance his closest competitors.
Senior Matt Beck, the only other DeSales boy to compete in the two-day tourney, shot an 86-87-173.
The Irish duo achieved a team total of 40 points, a half-dozen more than second-place Summit Classical Christian.
Pomeroy was third with 27.5 points behind a third-place finish by Vinny Vecchio (82-79-161) and a 13th-place finish by Grayson Slaybaugh (93-89-182). The Pirates' Cayle Mullins shot a Day 1 99 on Tuesday to miss the cut.
Eighth-grader Stella Warwick finished 36th out of 60 contestants in the girls Class 1B-2B competition, three spots ahead of Walla Walla Valley Academy's Ava Heinrich.
"This was her first year of competitive golf," DeSales coach Devon Caruso said. "It was pretty impressive if you ask me."
Jake Warwick's adventure was a bit of a roller coaster ride, according to Caruso.
"Jake didn't play as well as wanted to (in round one)," Caruso said. "He started with a double bogey. He got off to a shaky start, but he got back on track and did a good job staying grounded."
Caruso said Warwick got off to a better start on the final day and displayed strength down the stretch.
"He was hitting his driver better," Caruso said. "He had a stretch of three birdies on 12, 13, and 14. He made a long putt on 12, an eight-footer on 13, and one from 10 feet on 14. He had a two-putt par on 15 and a birdie on 16. He turned it on."
Warwick's effort will likely live on for many years to come.
"It was pretty cool that he was able to defend his title," Caruso said. "I pretty pumped for him. I was happy with how he battled back. He went out and did his thing."
Elsewhere, Wa-Hi's Nile Dumser shot a 74-82-156 to tie for 54th in the 3A boys competition at Spokane's Indian Canyon Golf Course, and Evie Sarley shot a Day 1 91 to miss the cut at Deer Park Golf Club.
College Place's Gemma Morrell made the cut in the 1A girls tournament at Liberty Lake's MeadowWood Golf Course and shot a 96 on Wednesday to place 29th with a two-day total of 191.
