State Track & Field, Day 3: Lincoln relay repeats, Ferguson sweeps 4A 100M, 200M
It was a hometown showdown the South Sound saw coming.
When the anchors of Lincoln and Silas’ 3A Boys 4x100M Relay raced stride-for-stride down the final stretch, the local crowd at Mount Tahoma received the duel many anticipated: Tacoma vs. Tacoma for the state title.
“It’s been like that all year,” Abes starter Immanuel Jordan said.
He’s right. For the third time this month, the Abes and Rams turned a postseason relay into a head-to-head sprint. Lincoln claimed earlier matchups at league and district meets, but Saturday’s race at the WIAA’s State Track & Field championships offered ultimate bragging rights.
“Tacoma’s gonna represent, regardless,” Abes senior Kasey Williams said.
Silas offered their toughest challenge yet — but Lincoln fended off their city rivals and successfully repeated their 3A Boys 4x100M Relay state title (41.86 seconds) at Mount Tahoma.
Ramon Jones edged Silas’ Christopher Trevino at the finish line, capping the high school careers of four Lincoln seniors in style. Jordan, Eddie Bruner Jr., Williams and the anchor-Jones outlasted their city rivals by five-hundredths of a second.
“Just leaning on each other,” Williams said. “Running for each other. It’s not just individual.
“It’s a brotherhood. It’s more than just racing.”
Lincoln and Silas met to congratulate each other following Saturday’s race, a show of mutual respect between the Tacoma schools. But the Abes never wanted to stop at ‘City Champs.’
“It’s Lincoln vs. Everybody,” Jones and Bruner Jr. said.
Minutes after his win, Bruner Jr. three-peated his 3A Boys 400M Dash title (46.62) in Tacoma. He suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday afternoon’s 200M Dash and missed Lincoln’s 4x400M Relay, scheduled to begin physical therapy with school trainers as early as next week, Abes coach Duane Lee said.
“We knew they were gonna come out firing,” Bruner Jr. said of Silas. “We knew.”
FERGUSON SWEEPS 4A BOYS 100M, 200M
Izear Ferguson made a sweet deal with his club coach ahead of the WIAA State Track & Field championships at Mount Tahoma: two state titles in the 4A Boys 100M and 200M dashes for a dozen bundt cakes.
“You know I had to pull through,” Ferguson smiled.
The desserts are on their way, but not before Sumner’s standout senior stood atop the podium with gold medals in the state’s marquee sprinting events.
Ferguson (10.58 seconds) outleaned Juanita’s Isaac Seraile (10.59) in Saturday morning’s 100-meter finals, then posted a season-best 21.51 to comfortably claim the 4A Boys 200M title. Sumner’s Braylon Pope, Ferguson’s football teammate, finished third (21.84)
“I could’ve got out a little faster, but I reeled him in, leaned, and we pulled through,” Ferguson said after winning the 100M Dash. “That’s all that matters, just getting through the race, staying mentally focused and making sure I come home with it.
“I put in work. I came from running (12 seconds in the 100-meter) as a freshman. To come here, to be here running and winning state, it feels amazing.”
It’s no secret that Sumner athletics are having a moment. Ferguson’s pair of titles aside, the Spartans’ football program captured back-to-back 4A football championships in 2024-25. Sumner’s baseball team blanked Gonzaga Prep for the program’s first-ever 4A state title in Everett on Saturday night, 7-0, and the boys soccer team finished runner-up in the 4A bracket over the weekend. Sumner’s girls basketball team has appeared in consecutive state championship games, too.
“It’s a community,” Ferguson said. “We all just come together as a community to better each other. Even the people that live in the city, they provide for the athletics, for the people in the school.
“Even if you don’t do athletics… it’s all just a community between everybody.”
Lincoln senior JoMierre Askew-Poirier finished second in the 3A Boys 100M Dash (10.67), and Silas sophomore Cannon Howard (10.77) took third.
Liberty of Issaquah’s Sutton Flint posted the best Boys 100M Dash (3A, 10.54) and Nathan Hale’s Kela Noji set a state meet record (2A, 11.77) with the best Girls 100M Dash.
DUROCHER, FIDAAR HEADLINE 4A BOYS 800M CLASSIC
Caden Durocher and Amin Fidaar crossed the finish line, turned to the real-time leaderboard, and waited patiently. When scores finally appeared, neither could celebrate a virtual tie in Saturday’s 4A Boys 800M run: 1:49.74.
Either way, the 4A SPSL rivals had delivered one of the WIAA meet’s more-defining, down-to-the-wire finishes in recent memory. It’s only fitting that Durocher (Olympia) and Fidaar (Rogers) awaited their fate together.
“I love Amin,” Durocher said. “I knew I just couldn’t let up. At districts, same kind of situation. I was leading with 200 (meters) to go, and I just let up a tiny bit. Amin leaned, he got me by (0.02 seconds).
“I didn’t want that to happen again. I didn’t want to leave any regrets on that track.”
Midway through his interviews with local media, Durocher received the good news. The Bears senior outlasted his friend and league rival by six-thousandths of a second (1:49.731), knocking off Fidaar’s state-best 800-meter time this spring. Within seconds, Fidaar was at his side offering a handshake and hug: “Congrats, state champ.”
Durocher and Fidaar text occasionally, often discussing training schedules.
“We spike up together, we warm up together, we talk (about our) race plan with each other,” Fidaar said. “It definitely helps push us both to our limits.
“I really can’t be disappointed about that. That was all-out. Caden is an awesome guy. He deserves a state title.”
Fidaar won Thursday’s 4A Boys 1600M Run with a state meet-record 4:04.57, outlasting Olympia’s Quenton Lanese by two-hundredths of a second.
Central Kitsap’s Mana Voss won the 3A Boys 800M Run (1:51.09) after capturing gold in a 1600M photo finish (4:06.55) on Thursday.
“Today was (about) showing that I can win big,” Voss said. “My coaches have been amazing. My parents keep me motivated. And even God. He really just blessed me with the physical ability to run at this level.
“I’m just blessed to be able to do this.”
