Chiefs' Rashee Rice Gets Even More Bad News Amid Chaotic NFL Offseason
It's been quite the turbulent offseason (again) for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice.
The 26-year-old wideout, who was suspended the first six games of last season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, made waves this offseason when he landed in jail just days after having offseason knee surgery.
There's talk of Rice not being ready medically for the start of training camp, and some wonder if the Chiefs are as invested in making him their No. 1 WR like they were last year.
Rice's future in Kansas City got a cryptic update from two of the top NFL insiders in the industry over the weekend, and it's not great news for the former second-round pick.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs aren't planning to offer Rice a contract extension this season, meaning he's playing for his NFL future in 2026.
"What I think of here is the opportunity that he's squandering," Schefter stated on a recent episode of the "Adam Schefter Podcast." "… If Rashee Rice were a clean player with no off-the-field issues, with no injuries, we'd be talking about a new contract this offseason is excess of $40 million a year.
"I hope he wakes up, grasps the gravity of his decisions and actions, and becomes the great player that he is and compensated accordingly. But the way it's going right now, he's going to cost himself millions of dollars in my mind."
SI.com's Albert Breer had an equally troubling update on Rice's situation during a radio appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
"I think they probably handle him like Dallas handled George Pickens - let's tag him and let's see," Breer stated.
Rice's career got off to a promising start. He totaled 79 catches, 938 yards, and seven touchdowns as a rookie, but he missed 13 games in his second year after suffering a season-ending knee injury after colliding With quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a freak play.
He played in eight games last year, logging 53 receptions, 571 yards, and five scores, but his off-the-field issues don't seem to be going away anytime soon.
With Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thronton Kansas City's WR2 and WR3, respectively, after losing Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency, the Chiefs are hurting for offensive playmakers.
Breer even suggested Rice's legal trouble could bring the Chiefs back into the A.J. Brown sweepstakes.
