Kevin Harvick Compares Kyle Busch's Sudden Death To Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Kevin Harvick reflected on the tragic death of Kyle Busch at age 41.
Busch died last week after a severe case of pneumonia progressed into sepsis. The sport is reeling from the loss of the two-time Cup Series champion.
Harvick paid tribute to Busch on a recent episode of his Happy Hour podcast. He likened the emotions following Busch's sudden passing to those after NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s death in 2001 following a crash in the Daytona 500.
"I've unfortunately been through this a couple times now," Harvick said. "You look back at everything that happened with Dale and everything that RCR (Richard Childress Racing) had to deal with, and their family, just eerily different but similar in the way we have to deal with it."
With heavy hearts, NASCAR held the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. Harvick felt Busch would have supported the decision to race.
"If you look at Kyle and what he would want is probably very similar to what Dale would have wanted," Harvick said. "He would have wanted those cars on the racetrack, and the healing to come from the race cars on the track, and the fans and the families and people and teams being able to work their way back to normal. But it's going to take a while."
Harvick reacts to Busch's death
Harvick also posted a tribute Thursday on social media following Busch's sudden passing. The Fox commentator noted that the heated rivals often made each other better.
"Kyle Busch and I spent years pushing each other to the limit," Harvick wrote. "We raced hard, traded paint and fought for every inch because all either of us wanted to do was beat the other.
"What people may not realize is how much that rivalry drove us both. Kyle made me better because you had to be at your absolute best to beat him. Over time, that fierce competition turned into a mutual respect."
Harvick expanded on their competitive relationship and Busch's legacy during his podcast tribute.
"Kyle was so good and so fast," Harvick said. "You could never let him think that he had the upper hand from a mental standpoint ... That intensity is what drives you. And when you have somebody that is that good and just as intense as you and not going to back down, you have to fight that fight."
Harvick is grateful that their racing careers intertwined.
"Probably the best thing that happened in my career was that I had a competitor that wouldn't back down like Kyle did," Harvick said. "And it made me a better driver, made me a better owner, teammate ... It made you better at every level. There wasn't anything more intense than that rivalry. That wasn't fake."
