Denver International Airport Will (Finally) Add Pedestrian Walkways Between Terminals

Denver International Airport (DEN) has been a staple of ski tourism for decades.

Whether it's to experience Colorado's countless world-class resorts or to connect to a smaller destination such as Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, or Big Sky, DEN is an essential hub for American ski tourism.

In other words, if you're a skier, odds are you've passed through DEN, and subsequently, you've been forced to take the airport's train system to connect between terminals. The train is reliable, but it isn't ideal for travelers trying to make a tight connection.

Finally, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel for DEN's train woes.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Denver International Airport (DEN) CEO Phil Washington recently announced that new pedestrian walkways will be constructed to connect terminals.

DEN plans to repurpose portions of the airport's underground baggage tunnels for pedestrians. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

"This is a big win for Denver's travelers and for our entire community," said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. "We've heard loud and clear that easier, more reliable ways to move between concourses has been a top priority for people traveling in and out of DEN. These new pedestrian walkways would deliver on that – giving folks more flexibility while we continue building one of the best-connected airports in the world. And who knows… maybe along the way, travelers will finally get a closer look at the underground tunnels and decide for themselves what's fact and what's fiction."

It's unclear how long the pedestrian tunnels will be, or how long it will take to walk between terminals, but the investment comes as DEN prepares to host 100 million passengers per year.

I can already envision myself sprinting through DEN's yet-to-be-constructed pedestrian tunnels, ski boots flailing off my pack, as I try to make a tight connection.

At least I won't be stuck in an endless line to ride a packed, sweaty train as the minutes tick by on my watch. Hopefully, those days are over.
