Victor Wembanyama Taking Heat for What He Did Immediately After Game 5 Loss

The San Antonio Spurs go as Victor Wembanyama goes – and he didn’t go very far on Tuesday night.

The NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year struggled from the floor, shooting 4-for-15 while going missing all five of his 3-point attempts en route to a 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama managed to finish with 20 points, but the bulk of that came from his 12 made free throws.

Immediately after the loss, Wembanyama gathered his belongings and walked out of the arena without speaking to reporters. It was a move that rubbed more than a few the wrong way considering Wembanyama’s past comments about the Spurs being “built” for the limelight.

“The Spurs had media standing in the locker room for nearly an hour waiting on Wemby to talk, all for nothing,” Thunder beat writer Addam Francisco said.

Another offered, “Of all the stuff I've seen, this is the only thing he's done that made me think less of his trajectory. He had a bad game, gotta talk to the media win or lose, you’re heir to the throne, we want to see you in the peaks and the valleys.”

“It will be framed as ‘intensity’ or his ‘absurd competitiveness’ some talking head will glorify him for ‘letting his actions do the talking’ lol. Meanwhile if [Anthony] Edwards or [Tyrese] Maxey did it, it would be ‘immaturity,'” added a third.

Game 5 was Wembanyama’s worst of the series and he’ll need to bounce back in a major way in Game 6 if the Spurs want to force a decisive Game 7.
