Andy Reid Shares Update on Patrick Mahomes' On-Field Progress

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of time until they open up the 2026 NFL season with a Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14. After beginning OTA offseason workouts on Tuesday, much of the attention is on quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The two-time MVP is recovering from a torn ACL, suffered on Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers last year. His season was cut short after starting 14 games, throwing for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

According to the BASS Medical Group, it could take NFL players eight to 12 months to recover from such a serious injury.

Mahomes began his rehab process quickly, getting surgery just one day after tearing his ACL. That decision is quickly paying off.

Just over five months removed from surgery, Mahomes is back out with his team, preparing for next season. Participating in OTAs, Reid spoke to the media on Thursday, sharing an encouraging update on the quarterback.

"I've liked what I've seen," Reid said, according to ESPN's Nate Taylor. "He's working hard. This is good for him, getting out there & throwing. He's doing partial practice, but it's important to get his timing up."

It's yet another positive update for the three-time Super Bowl champion. ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported that Mahomes is "way ahead of schedule," and that a Week 1 return is possible.

After going just 6-11 last year, and 0-3 in the games Mahomes missed, the Chiefs are feeling urgency to get their franchise quarterback back under center completely healthy. With over three months until the season begins, Mahomes will continue to ramp up his participation in practice.
