Pirates' Konnor Griffin Being Monitored for Potential Injury
The Pittsburgh Pirates made a surprise announcement on the status of their franchise shortstop.
Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Konnor Griffin, the Pirates' 20-year-old phenom, is currently being evaluated for a forearm strain. The strain is said to be minor, but that isn't stopping the Pirates from running tests on Griffin out of precaution. He is currently considered day-to-day, and was left out of Pittsburgh's starting lineup on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs.

From the way it sounds, Griffin should be fine. However, it makes perfect sense that the Pirates are treating the situation with urgency and caution because Griffin has been a legitimate difference-maker for the club.
At the time he was promoted and made his MLB debut on April 3, Griffin was near-unanimously considered the top prospect in all of baseball; the Pirates have so much confidence in him that they finalized a nine-year, $140 million contract extension with the young shortstop less than a week later. So far, Griffin has been acclimating himself to the major leagues very well with a .261/.322/.394 slash line, four home runs, three defensive runs saved, a 101 wRC+ and 1.1 fWAR in 49 games.
The call-up of Griffin clearly energized the Pirates, who are battling in an NL Central where every team has a winning record. Pittsburgh sits in last at the moment, but have a 29-27 record thanks to a strong offense (274 runs scored, 5th most in baseball) and a starting rotation led by Paul Skenes.

Although Griffin was kept out of Thursday's lineup against the Cubs, he is reportedly still available off the bench, which should alleviate any major concerns about his injury.
The Pirates still made a roster move to bolster the infield depth by calling up Tyler Callihan and sending down fellow prospect Esmerlyn Valdez to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. However, this is less in response to Griffin's day-to-day status and moreso a preparation for Ryan O'Hearn's return; O'Hearn is working his way back from a right quad muscle strain.
