Sports World Stunned By Joao Fonseca's Historic Win Over Novak Djokovic
Tennis fans have been waiting for Joao Fonseca to have his signature moment at a Grand Slam tournament. Well, how about a comeback win over Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros?
Despite dropping the first two sets, Fonseca stormed back to a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 win over Djokovic. While there's no question the 24-time Grand Slam champion was fatigued down the stretch, his level of play was more than adequate. Fonseca simply delivered the goods time and time again.
Fonseca closed out the match with three straight aces, proving he wasn't afraid of the moment at Philippe-Chatrier.
As you'd imagine, the tennis world had a lot to say about Fonseca's win.
"Novak Djokovic fails to reach the semifinals for the first time in his last six majors, getting knocked out by a booming comeback effort by Joao Fonseca. A cross-generational classic, golly gosh," Ben Rothenberg said. "Anything is possible here."
"Unbelievable tennis theatre. Last two sets were off the charts offensive displays from both players. It wasn't really about mistakes- it was a shotmaking battle," Gil Gross said. "Fonseca takes a massive leap forward in his career. How good was his attitude these last two matches from 2-0 down?
"Back-to-back five sets wins for Fonseca, one against the GOAT? in heat? Closing with three straight aces? ….any questions about durability have been answered," Jon Wertheim wrote.
The road ahead for Fonseca.
Could this be a career-defining win for Fonseca? It sure could if he keeps up this positive wave of momentum.
Fonseca will take on either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul in the fourth round at Roland Garros. If he were to win that match, he'd most likely be favored to at least reach the quarterfinals.
As we saw this Friday in Paris, there's no reason to doubt Fonseca anymore. Finally, the youngster has arrived.
