Tua Tagovailoa Deemed a ‘Bargain' Deal for Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have been in quarterback turmoil and, of course, let Kirk Cousins walk during the offseason. Now, Cousins is with the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Falcons have veteran quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on a one-year deal.

In a piece published on Wednesday, May 27, Mike Sando of The Athletic named his favorite moves for each NFL franchise during the league’s offseason.

“With most major NFL offseason moves complete, it’s a good time to single out a favorite move for each team,” he says in the feature. “This exercise is always easier for some teams than for others, so some of these ‘favorites’ are relative to what’s available.”

For the Falcons, he praises the Tagovailoa selection and calls it “taking advantage of the Dolphins’ poor investment.”

“Adding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for $1.2 million per year, which ranks 60th among NFL quarterbacks and 20th among players Atlanta added this offseason, was a bargain for a team with its own dubious quarterback spending history,” he states in the piece.

He adds: “There's a great chance the Falcons will be in the market for another quarterback soon, but at least the team is gaining flexibility at the position after its disastrous investment in Kirk Cousins.”

What Does Tua Tagovailoa Bring to the Falcons?

The Falcons have been swinging between quarterbacks for a while, and their franchise isn’t set with Tagovailoa, who obviously is nearing the end of his NFL career. But, having a veteran like Tagovailoa in the fold brings stability to a franchise that very much needs it. He’s a solid quarterback with good numbers, and even if Tagovailoa isn’t Tom Brady, he’ll help this team stay steady as they work out the kinks of their lineup for now and the future.
