Clatskanie softball falls in state semifinals

Clatskanie softball narrowly made a comeback, but the Tigers came up short, falling to Heppner/Ione 12-8 in the OSAA 2A/1A Softball State Championship semifinals on Tuesday at Heppner High School.

Down 12-4 after six innings, Olivia George hit a three-run home run and Dalilah Baier hit an RBI grounder to cut the deficit to just four in the top of the seventh, but the Tigers wouldn't get any closer.

George had four hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs in the semifinals against Heppner/Ione on Tuesday, but the Tigers fell 12-8 and had their season come to an end.

Clatskanie got on the board in the top of the first inning when Addy Wemmer bunted to bring McKinsey Doyle home. The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the frame and then pulled ahead 6-1 after scoring five runs in the second.

After singles from Doyle and Joey Sizemore in the third, the former stole third and then home to score a run. George then hit an RBI single to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the inning, Heppner/Ione had the bases loaded with no outs in, but the Tigers made it out of the frame unscathed.

George then hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to pull the Tigers within two, but the Mustangs scored six runs in the bottom of the period to pull away.

George finished the game with four hits and five RBIs with two home runs. Doyle tallied three hits while Kennedy Johnson had two hits, including a double, and Wemmer, Baier, Sizemore and Kayden Byrum each hit singles.

Sizemore pitched for 4 1/3 innings, striking out four batters while giving up 10 hits and 11 runs. George came in for 1 2/3 innings of relief work and struck out one batter while giving up two hits and one run. Only two of the 12 runs that the Tigers gave up were earned, as they committed seven errors in the field.

Clatskanie finished the season with a 19-9 record. The Tigers won the 2A/1A-Special District 1 championship with a 10-2 mark in league play.
