Brian Windhorst Gives Injury Update on Knicks' Mitchell Robinson

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is listed as questionable to play in Wednesday night’s Game 1 matchup of the 2026 NBA Finals.

The Knicks big man, who plays an important role for the Eastern Conference Finals champions off the bench, underwent surgery to repair what was originally reported as a broken right pinky last Friday.

But during an appearance with ESPN’s “Get Up” on Wednesday morning, NBA insider Brian Windhorst clarified that Mitchell actually broke his fifth metacarpal.

“It wasn’t his pinky. It was his fifth metacarpal. It’s a broken hand. When you break this part of your hand, it’s known as a boxer’s fracture because most of the time it means you hit something,” Windhorst explained.

It’s remains unclear how Robinson sustained the injury, but ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the injury occurred at Robinson’s home sometime last week.

Robinson fully plans to take the court for Game 1 on Wednesday night, but the Knicks’ medical staff still needs to clear him for action, per Charania. The 28-year-old 7-footer participated in light shooting and dribbling drills during the open media portion of Tuesday’s practice at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center.

Robinson was crucial for the Knicks in their NBA Cup championship victory over the Spurs this past December, ripping down 15 rebounds through just 18 minutes of action.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals will tipoff at 8:30 p.m. ET.
