Fever's Kelsey Mitchell Hits Major Career Milestone in Win Over Dream

The Indiana Fever took on the Atlanta Dream in a highly anticipated first meeting of the season between former 2024 draft picks Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

It was also the Fever’s first Commissioner’s Cup game, a tournament that Clark’s team won last season by defeating the Minnesota Lynx during one of Clark’s injury absences.

She’s healthy and back on the court this season, playing in Thursday night’s game. She finished with 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds in an 83-71 win over Atlanta.

While Clark was good, her teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, led the Fever with 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including shooting 3-for-4 for her 3-pointers.

While 25 points might seem like a typical performance for Mitchell, this particular one was extra special. During the game, she officially scored her 5,000th career point, a major milestone for many WNBA stars.

That occurred with under three minutes to go in the third quarter as Mitchell drove into the paint and glided across the lane, hitting a jumpshot to put her team ahead 55-46.

The game didn’t stop for that special moment, as it would likely have stopped for someone breaking the all-time scoring record. However, Mitchell’s feat put her among 28 players who have scored 5,000 points or more in their WNBA careers.

She’ll need another 500 points or so to move past Lindsay Whalen for No. 25 on the all-time WNBA scoring leaders list.

Depending on how long she continues playing and contributing at the level she is, she could find herself amongst the league’s top 10 all-time scorers. Currently, Candace Parker sits at No. 10 on that list with 6,574 career points.

Since joining the Fever as their No. 2 pick in 2018, Mitchell has carved out a great career, including All-Star appearances in her last three seasons, and a spot on the All-WNBA First Team last year. She was also a key part of the team’s postseason run while Clark was injured.

With their win on Thursday, Indiana improved to 5-4, half a game behind the New York Liberty and a full game behind Atlanta for the Eastern Conference lead.

Mitchell and the Fever visit the Liberty in another Commissioner’s Cup game at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
