Braves Make a Flurry of Roster Moves Before White Sox Game

The Atlanta Braves made a number of roster moves on Wednesday ahead of their second game against the Chicago White Sox.

The team announced that they have selected right-hander James Karinchak to the major league roster and designated righty Carlos Carrasco for assignment. They also recalled righty JR Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett and placed reliever Tyler Kinley on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 8) with right elbow inflammation.

The Braves own baseball's best record at 45-22. However, they lost to the White Sox in their series opener on Tuesday on a walk-off home run from Braden Montgomery in his MLB debut.

The following day, Atlanta made some changes to their pitching staff. The Braves needed a few fresh arms in their bullpen after Carlos Carrasco pitched 1.2 innings last night. He gave up four hits and allowed one run. They will also be without Kinley for at least the next 15 days.

As a result, Karinchak and Ritchie were both added to the big-league roster.

Karinchak has not pitched in the majors since 2023 for the Cleveland Guardians. He was a solid reliever during his five seasons in Cleveland, posting a 3.10 ERA in 174 appearances. The 30-year-old missed the entire 2024 season due to right shoulder inflammation. He signed a minor league deal with the White Sox last season, but was released by the organization on June 15, 2025.

The Braves signed Karinchak to a minors deal this past December. He has been pitching for Triple-A Gwinnett this year, where he posted a 2.45 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 25.2 innings.

As for Ritchie, the 22-year-old rookie has made five starts for the Braves this season, producing a 1-1 record and 4.56 ERA. The Braves sent him back down to Triple-A on May 19. Now, he is back in the majors and can either start for Atlanta or provide them with length out of the bullpen.

Kinley, 35, is a big loss for the Braves' bullpen. The right-hander has a 3.18 ERA on the year, and compiled a 1.35 ERA in his last seven appearances.

Regarding Carrasco, the Braves have designated him for assignment a total of four times this season. He has been re-signed to multiple minor league deals this year and will likely be kept around unless another team claims him off waivers. Carrasco has a 3.00 ERA in nine innings in 2026.
