Patrick Mahomes Becomes First $500 Million Player In NFL History

Patrick Mahomes might be recovering from a torn ACL injury, but the three-time Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs quarterback isn't going to stop playing anytime soon.

The former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback has added some money and years to his contract. The Chiefs have made Mahomes the first $500 million player in the history of the National Football League.

The Chiefs are adding two years and some more money to Mahomes' contract. It takes the total value of his deal to $504.75 million, making it the first NFL deal valued at over a half-billion dollars.

ESPN NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport broke the news.

Mahomes, who has won three Super Bowls, is expected to be healthy toward the start of the 2026 NFL season.

NFL fans react to Mahomes' $500 million deal

NFL fans are weighing in on Mahomes' deal.

"Fantastic news. Mahomes will be under contract through his age 38 season," one fan wrote.

"This has been in the works for a while and I imagine an whole heck of a lot of cap hit 'magic' is worked into it. They needed to get this done and I'm happy to see it! Excited to see the structure," one fan added.

"Interesting. Thought they'd do this next year but guess they decided to do it this year. They are just moving money around and added some more cash ontop of it so his cash flow mirrors the best QBs. The length of the deal still means it's a steal and they have flexibility," one fan added.

"The Kansas City Chiefs just created some Cap space… Let's see what they do with it," one fan added.

Schefter added some more details, too.

"Patrick Mahomes' initial rookie contract in 2017 was a 4-year, $16.4M deal. The 10-year, $450M contract he signed in 2020 was groundbreaking, and he's already earned well over $200M of it while the quarterback market has continued to skyrocket. Now, the Chiefs are once again adjusting that deal to bring him more in line with the current QB market," he wrote.

The Chiefs, who missed the playoffs in 2025, will look to get back in 2026-27.
