Yankees Surprisingly Release Former Athletics Veteran

The New York Yankees recently parted ways with a former Athletics veteran the team acquired before the 2026 season.

New York signed Seth Brown to a minor league contract, and Brown played for the Yankees' minor league team, the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders this spring. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre released Brown on Sunday after 53 games played.

The Yankees assigned Brown, a left fielder, to the AAA team on Jan. 19 after his Jan. 18 signing. New York has a backlog of left fielders, led by Cody Bellinger, so the Yankees didn't enter the season with an imminent need for Brown.

However, the Yankees organization parted ways with Brown as left fielder Giancarlo Stanton remains on the 10-day IL. Stanton injured his calf last week, which leaves Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones and Jose Caballero as the reserve left field options behind Bellinger.

New York also has a slew of injuries right now despite leading the AL East. Lineup injuries include Aaron Judge, Austin Wells and Trent Grisham. Brown could have been a seasoned player to call up from the minors if desired, but the Yankees decided otherwise ahead of Tuesday's series with the Chicago White Sox.

Brown played seven seasons for the Athletics between his time in the majors and the minors. He had 568 career games with the Athletics, which included 38 in 2025 and 124 in 2024.

His career numbers include 74 home runs, a .226 batting average, 371 runs scored and 233 RBI. Brown had nine home runs, 21 RBI, 23 runs scored and a .235 average for the RailRiders this season.

A former 19th-round pick in 2015 by the Athletics, Brown went back and forth between the Athletics and the team's minor league system between 2015 and 2025. He played four seasons in the Athletic's farm system until his MLB debut in 2019.

Brown played as many as 150 games for the A's in 2022, when he batted .230 for 25 home runs, 73 RBI and 55 runs scored. He played over 100 games in three other seasons and as recently as 2024, when he played 124 games.

Another team could pick up Brown in the coming days and find a valuable addition.
