Phillies Announce Trea Turner News After Exiting Marlins Game
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has had a disastrous fourth season with the organization. The 33-year-old has been one of the worst defensive players this season at an important position up the middle.
To make matters worse, Turner is having one of the worst offensive seasons of his career. Across 70 games, he has posted a .219 batting average, .269 on-base percentage, .598 OPS, seven home runs and 21 RBIs.
He is just one year removed from winning a National League batting title and two years removed from earning an All-Star selection, so he clearly can be a better player. However, at 33, he could also be in decline, which is troubling considering there are still seven years remaining on his $300 million contract.
His disappointing season took another difficult turn during Monday's series opener against the Miami Marlins. Turner was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning and was checked out by trainers and manager Don Mattingly but elected to stay in the game.
However, by the top of the eighth inning, Turner had been removed. Third baseman Alec Bohm entered in his place with Edmundo Sosa moving over to shortstop. There was an initial belief his early exit was not due to the hit by pitch but instead the Phillies holding a big lead, up 5-0 at the time of his removal.
That was not the case. "Trea Turner left with a bruised right wrist, Phillies announced. He's being evaluated further," reported Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation.

If Turner is forced to miss extended time, it would not be a huge blow immediately. After all, he has been a liability this year. But if Philadelphia intends on making a deep run in October, they are going to need Turner at full strength.
Mattingly will likely provide further updates on his condition postgame, along with whether he will need a stint on the injured list.
