Alexi Lalas Won't Apologize For World Cup Commentary, Fires Back At 'Weak' Fans

Love him or hate him, Alexi Lalas isn't going to shy away from sharing his true feelings.

Lalas, a standout defender for the USMNT during the 1994 World Cup, has been a studio analyst for FOX Sports since 2015. He's known for being incredibly blunt with his commentary, regardless if he's talking about the United States or a foreign country.

Earlier this week, Lalas made headlines for calling France's first-half approach against Senegal "arrogant." That remark drew an incredible response from legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"It's not arrogance, it's confidence," Ibrahimovic clapped back. "Ignorant people will say it's arrogance, intelligent people will say it's confidence."

While there doesn't seem to be any beef between Ibrahimovic and Lalas this Friday, some U.S. soccer fans are furious with Lalas because he continues to refer to the sport as soccer, not fútbol.

"Alexi we need to talk about you continuing to call the sport 'soccer' cmon man," a fan tweeted at Lalas. "You could bridge the gap. Even the US players call it 'football' in overseas interviews out of respect."

Well, Lalas made it known this week that he's got zero interest in changing his style.

"Yeah…that's not gonna happen," Lalas replied. "I call it soccer. I own it proudly. I never apologize for it. If you grew up calling it soccer and changed out of insecurity or some misguided belief it makes you more authentic/credible…it doesn't. It's cringe. It makes you look like a weak poser."

Ouch.

Fans should expect to hear more from Alexi Lalas this Friday.

Lalas is expected to provide halftime and post-match commentary for the United States' showdown with Australia this Friday.

A week ago, Lalas praised the USMNT's performance against Paraguay.

"I think that's the greatest half of group play from a men's team at a World Cup in history," Lalas said. "Everything went right - total dominance from top to bottom."

We'll see if the USMNT once again gives Lalas something to cheer about.
