Spain Gets Concerning Lamine Yamal News Ahead of Must-Win Saudi Arabia Match

Spain arrived at the 2026 FIFAWorld Cup as one of the tournament favorites.

Then, they opened with one of the biggest surprises of the first round.

Despite dominating possession (74%), generating 2.10 expected goals and firing seven shots on net, Spain were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Cape Verde. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha produced a series of spectacular saves, while Spain’s attack was nowhere to be found when it mattered most.

The situation only changed when Spain’s 18-year-old superstar Lamine Yamal came on in the 71st minute, immediately stretching Cape Verde’s defense and injecting some urgency into an otherwise stale attack. Yet, La Roja still couldn’t edge out a win and now enters Sunday’s match against Saudi Arabia desperate for three points.

However, a new development surrounding Yamal has just shifted the outlook dramatically. Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Yamal admitted that while he feels “ready” to contribute, he’s not yet ready for a full 90-minute clash as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered with Barcelona in April.

“I’m looking forward to Sunday. I feel good physically, I’m ready for whatever the boss wants. I know that doesn’t mean I’m going to play, but I’m ready,” Yamal said. “It isn’t the moment to play a full game, but I’ll play the minutes the boss wants.”

This is concerning news for Spain as Yamal remains their most explosive weapon. Head coach Luis de la Fuente even acknowledged after the Cape Verde match that the game immediately shifted once Yamal came onto the field.

Yet, even after nearly two months of rehab, Spain’s medical staff continues to manage his workload carefully, and now the team will need to hold off Saudi Arabia without him for most of the game.

Group H has become unexpectedly tight after the opening matches, with Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, and Cape Verde all sitting on one point.

A win against Saudi Arabia would put Spain back in control of its destiny, setting up a potential winner-takes-all for the top spot in the group against Uruguay on June 26 in Guadalajara. Anything less, however, and Spain would enter that final match fighting to avoid an early exit from the group stage.
