NASCAR Throws Red Flag After Driver Slams Into Concrete Barrier at San Diego
With four laps to go in the NASCARCraftsman Truck Series race at Naval Base Coronado, Tyler Ankrum took a massive hit into the wall on the outside of pit road as he came out of the final turn. Officials were forced to throw the red flag to repair the wall.
Street courses don't always have SAFER barriers on each wall. On the frontstretch between the track and pit road, there is a line of concrete barriers. Ankrum hit the wall so hard, his truck dislodged a couple of barriers from each other.
This was a massive hit. The course at Naval Base Coronado has given drivers fits already this weekend. All three series have at least practiced on the track today. When the Truck Series race gets going again, there will only be a few laps to go. Chandler Smith leads.
The wreck ripped the entire right side of Ankrum's truck of the frame. Just a nasty hit.

Drivers in the Truck Series, O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, and Cup Series found the San Diego track difficult. More than a handful of drivers found themselves hitting the wall or spinning out at least once.
McAnally Hilgemann Racing has released a post stating that Tyler Ankrum was checked and released from the infield care center. That is a relief. There was nothing but chassis exposed on the right side of his truck after that hit.
At the time of the wreck, Ankrum was racing in the top-10 and trying to fight for a top-five finish. Coming out of the final turn with four laps to go, his truck slid and just slammed into that wall. He was not the first to have that happen in that turn, but he took the hardest hit for sure.
