Americans defeat Aussies 2-0
The United States Men's National Soccer Team punched their ticket to the knockout stage of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Australia.
The match was played in Seattle, where a predominantly American crowd provided energetic support throughout.
The first goal came early when USMNT forward Folarin Balogun applied heavy pressure to the Australian defense with a pass into the box.
Australia defender Cameron Burgess made a crucial mistake, scoring an own goal that gave the United States a 1-0 lead.
The U.S. kept the pressure on in the first half, and right back Alex Freeman added to the lead with an athletic header into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The American defense was strong throughout the match and played with plenty of physicality. By the final whistle, both teams had contributed to a physical contest that featured 28 fouls and seven yellow cards.
The United States won most of the statistical categories, controlling 62% of possession and recording 10 shots.
