Geoducks’ season ends in penalty kicks

The record-setting season ended in a shootout for The Evergreen State College men’s soccer team.

Top seed Rocky Mountain College squeaked by with a 1-1 (4-3) penalty-kick victory over the Geoducks on Thursday at the Willamalane Sports Complex.

The loss eliminates the Geoducks from the Cascade Collegiate Conference soccer championships.

“It’s hard to see the guys go out and any ending was going to be bittersweet, right,” Evergreen coach John Purtteman said. “It was a great year and individual performances were fantastic. It was a good team against a good team. That’s the way the game is.”

It was scoreless until Rocky Mountain’s Donovan Luce connected in the 72nd minute. He capitalized on a collision between Geoducks defender Jordan Zimmerman and goalkeeper Angel Guerra to net the 1-0 advantage.

Though, Evergreen leveled it again in the 75th minute when Crisantos Chavez hit a cross near the goal. Battlin’ Bears goalkeeper Cole Catlin misplayed the ball into the net.

The Bears outshot the Geoducks, 19-15. Guerra tallied nine saves.

No one scored through the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Tanner Williams, Issa Hassan and Jake Zimmerman all converted for the Geoducks in the shootout, but Colin Gregory netted the winner for the Bears.
