Kent-Meridian graduate David Jones leads Portland State to win

Kent-Meridian graduate David Jones was having a banner day Saturday.

His Portland State Vikings were putting the finishing touches on a regular-season closing victory at Eastern Washington (6-5, 5-3), when he fumbled midway through the fourth quarter and watched as the Eagles returned it for a touchdown to suddenly make it a three-point game.

But Jones had the last laugh, helping the Vikings put together a 12-play, 63-yard drive to run out the clock on a 34-31 Big Sky victory in Cheney. Jones had six rushes for 33 yards on the final possession, including a game-clinching 17-yard scamper on a second down play.

He finished with 152 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns in the victory, which gives Portland State (9-2 overall, 6-2 Big Sky) a share of second place in the Big Sky.

The loss was Eastern Washington’s third in a row and likes means the Eagles’ season is over.
