Saint Martin’s Porter sets new record in 3,000 meters at WSU Open

Saint Martin’s University senior Shannon Porter set a new record in the 3,000 meters and three school records were also broken by the Saints men’s and women’s track and field team at the WSU Open in Pullman.

Porter’s time of 10 minutes, 10.44 seconds in the 3,000 meters broke a nine-year old meet record of 10:15.95 set by Central Washington’s Katie Hummel in 2007.

Porter also broke her old school record, which was 10:29.64.

Saints senior Kirby Neagle also broke her own record in the weight throw with a distance of 52 feet, 3 1/4 inches. Her previous best was 42-10 3/4, which was set at the Boise Invitational to open the indoor season.

St. Martin’s senior Mikel Smith was also notable with a 6-foot, 10 3/4-inch jump in the high jump — good for second overall. Smith owns the SMU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference record with a mark of 7-0 1/2 set last season.
