Sounders crash out on Lietget’s late flurry
With the Seattle Sounders struggling to stay in the MLS playoff chase, at least there was the possibility of adding a fifth U.S. Open Cup to the trophy case.
But Sebastian Lietget put those dreams on ice.
Lietget scored twice in the final minutes as the L.A. Galaxy defeated the Sounders 4-2 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, ousting Seattle from the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
The go-ahead goal came in the 88th minute as Baggio Husidic’s cross found Lietget, who had slipped between Seattle defenders Oniel Fisher and Zach Scott. Lietget poked it in for a 3-2 lead.
He added another a few minutes later, adding insult in injury time.
Seattle had appeared to have wrested control of the match when Herculez Gomez scored from a tight angle by the right post in the 59th minute, volleying in a looping cross from Dylan Remick. That gave the Sounders a 2-1 lead to cling to in for the game’s final half-hour.
But L.A.’s Gio Dos Santos equalized on a point-blank shot in the 77th minute to even the score.
The Sounders next travel to Kansas City for a Sunday match against Sporting KC in regular MLS play. Kickoff is at noon.
