The Washington Huskies will be without starting linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio when they open spring camp later this week.

UW coach Kalen DeBoer announced Monday afternoon the fifth-year junior, who has been a key contributor for the Huskies inside during his career, will miss the month-long set of practices which begin Wednesday.

Ulofoshio was injured early on in winter workouts, DeBoer noted, and is expected to miss time this fall.

“He will miss some games,” DeBoer said. “We hope to have him for a part of the season. I know he’s determined to push through. … He’s a determined guy, and motivated, always upbeat and he’s attacking it.”

Ulofoshio led the Huskies in tackles (47) during the shortened four-game 2020 season and was UW’s leading tackler through six games last fall with 51.

He played nearly every snap on defense before he was sidelined by an injury for the rest of the season following UW’s loss to UCLA midway through October.

The Huskies will also be without their top two returners in the backfield this spring in junior Richard Newton and sophomore Cameron Davis, though both are expected to return this fall.

“They’re recovering,” Grubb said. “They’re doing a great job. They’ll be back full speed for camp and everything, but they won’t practice this spring ball.”

Newton missed the final six games of UW’s season last fall following a season-ending knee injury against UCLA. He led the Huskies in rushing through their first three games with 38 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Davis appeared in all 12 games for the Huskies last fall, including starting against Colorado, and finished with 85 carries for 308 yards and two touchdowns while adding 115 receiving yards on 14 catches.

Redshirt freshman running back Emeka Megwa, who reclassified to 2021 to join the Huskies last fall, but did not play, is also likely to miss practices this spring, DeBoer said, while redshirt freshman running back Sam Adams II, an Eastside Catholic High School product, will be limited this spring.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jabez Tinae, a former Kennedy Catholic, will also be limited during spring practices. Tinae appeared in one game as a true freshman last fall.
