Former Huskies running back Deontae Cooper announces transfer to San Jose State

Former Huskies running back Deontae Cooper announced via Twitter on Sunday morning that he plans to transfer to San Jose State for his seventh and final season of eligibility.

Cooper posted a photo of himself wearing a San Jose State jersey with the message “The Mountain West in Trouble!”

The story of Cooper’s six-year UW career has been well-documented. A touted recruit out of Perris, California, Cooper tore anterior-cruciate ligaments in his knees a total of three times, derailing his first three collegiate seasons. He rehabilitated well enough to play in the 2013-15 seasons, totaling 653 yards and four touchdowns on 122 carries. He also served as a team captain in 2015 and represented the Huskies at Pac-12 media days.

After he missed three seasons due to injury, the NCAA cleared Cooper to play through 2016, making him a seventh-year senior this season. He already has a bachelor’s degree and was working toward a master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership.
