Notes and highlights from Day 2 of Huskies spring practice

It was a fine morning to be outside at Husky Stadium, where the Washington Huskies completed their second practice of the spring on Wednesday. They’re still not wearing any pads, just helmets and jerseys and shorts and socks and shoes, so there’s no real contact yet. But a few things happened that people might find noteworthy, and I was there to note them, and now I’m here to type and publish them. Lucky you.

--- Budda Baker had a good day. He made a nice play to break up a pass thrown to tight end Darrell Daniels during a 1-on-1 drill, tracking Daniels on a corner route before leaping to knock the ball away. And he made the most impressive play of practice during an 11-on-11 period a little later. Jake Browning made what appeared to be a pretty nice throw to Dante Pettis over the middle, but the ball caromed off Pettis’ hands, bounced straight into the air, and Baker dove in to snag the interception. The defense celebrated while Browning waved his arms in an “incomplete” motion, but the airhorn sounded and the turnover stood.

--- Redshirt freshman Andre Baccellia looked pretty solid running routes during the 1-on-1 period, including a tough, contested reception against coverage from Sidney Jones.

--- From the “John Ross is still fast” department: he caught a perfectly-thrown deep ball from Browning, in stride, after zipping past Jones during a 1-on-1 drill. Ross can still run.

--- The first-team offensive line looks the same as it did on Monday, from left to right -- Trey Adams, Michael Kneip, Coleman Shelton, Shane Brostek and Kaleb McGary. The second-team offensive line, from left to right, included Andrew Kirkland, Henry Roberts, Matt James, Jesse Sosebee and Devin Burleson. Shelton also took some snaps with the No. 2 offense at center.

--- The first-team defense also looked the same, with Jaylen Johnson, Elijah Qualls and Greg Gaines up front, Psalm Wooching, Azeem Victor, Keishawn Bierria and Joe Mathis at linebacker, Jones and Kevin King at cornerback, and Baker and Jojo McIntosh at safety.

--- Second-string cornerback Jordan Miller intercepted a pass thrown by K.J. Carta-Samuels during an 11-on-11 period, and Johnson recovered a fumble by quarterback Tony Rodriguez.

--- Victor made a nice play to bat away a pass by Carta-Samuels near the end of an 11-on-11 drill.

--- The offense, which moved the ball very little and did not get it into the end zone, had to run gassers afterward.

--- Didn’t see receivers Brayden Lenius or Isaiah Renfro at practice. Lenius had an ice pack on his right knee during Monday’s practice. The same players who were limited or out on Monday were still limited or out today.

--- The Huskies will hold their Pro Day on Thursday morning, and several participating players were in attendance at Wednesday’s practice, including Jaydon Mickens, Taniela Tupou, Siosifa Tufunga, Joshua Perkins, Cory Littleton and James Atoe.

--- The next practice is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday.
